Ideas for actions to take for a greener Halloween

October brings with it its pumpkin-flavored coffees and its leaves that twirl in the wind. But for many of us, it means above all the return of Halloween! A favorite holiday for many families, it nevertheless poses a challenge when our little tribe is committed to a zero waste approach. How can we reconcile our desire to reduce our ecological footprint and our desire to participate in this great costume ball?

We have some suggestions for you:

  • Find varieties of candy that are sold in small cardboard boxes rather than in plastic packaging.
  • Make surprise bags with a low ecological impact for our loved ones: we buy candies in bulk which we distribute in small bags of recycled fabric and which we close with a piece of ribbon.
  • Promote reuse by visiting thrift stores, going through our family's old wardrobes or asking our network of friends to find the clothes and accessories we need to create our disguises.
  • In the same spirit, rent a suit from a specialist company rather than buying a new one.
  • Use our creativity to make our decorations with recyclable or compostable materials:
    • our green bins are full of items that can easily be transformed into scary creatures
    • several patterns of witches, ghosts and other monsters to reproduce on construction paper are available for free online
    • Pumpkin carving remains a timeless classic!
  • Speaking of pumpkins, their seeds roasted in the oven with a hint of oil and salt are a delight and their flesh makes a tasty compote!
  • Use fabric bags for collecting treats.
  • Walk to knock on doors rather than drive.

Happy Green Halloween everyone!
